Everyone had to go to church on Sunday. It was required to have a church in your manor. If you did not follow those rules you would be excommunicated. Meaning that you were not allowed to do any church activities or sit at any mass. Most people would not associate with you under those circumstances.
The church had a lot of roles in their congregation like the Pope and Priests The pope was the head of the Catholic church and had the most religious power. He was seen as “God's representative on Earth.” People worshiped him. Just like a job, it was his duty to decide what the church taught. From time to time the pope would write something called a Bull explaining the religious teaching of the church and could decide if a person was going against the church’s teachings. He would also give out punishments if you were found guilty. The priests were the special ones. They are considered holy. Priests didn't have to pay taxes because their work was considered noble. They all provided care for the people in the community and had a special place to live and socialize with others. They baptized people, married couples, and they also spoke at mass. The priests were in charge of mass and ensured everything went as planned. |
